Long-time Imperial Valley newsman Gary Redfern has been named editor of the Holtville Tribune/Calexico Chronicle/Imperial Valley Weekly newspapers, publisher Brenda Torres announced.
Redfern has worked for the publication since July 2017, writing the Business Buzz weekly news column. Copy editing was added to his duties in January. Torres said as editor he has oversight over all news operations, including editing, structuring of beats, reporter assignments and reporter training.
“We are placing a stronger focus on news, both daily and in-depth coverage, about the issues and people most relevant to the communities we serve. Gary has the ideal background to help lead that effort. We are pleased to have him on board,” Torres said.
Redfern has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master’s degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. His previous news experience includes the Milwaukee Sentinel, Imperial Valley Press and The Desert Review. He previously was manager of Spectrum Creative Solutions in El Centro and a marketing specialist for Valley Independent Bank (now Rabobank).
“This is a unique opportunity to help guide a weekly community news organization that is expanding the depth of its news coverage while remaining true to its roots,” Redfern said.
The newspapers trace their roots back more than a century, are adjudicated by xxxx and members of the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association.
