Teachers from throughout the Holtville Unified School District were recognized and thanked for their dedication to the community and its children during an annual luncheon at the Imperial Valley Swiss Club on Monday.
The event is hosted by the Holtville Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by local businesses and organizations. The start of the 2018-19 school year marks the 17th time the chamber has put the lunch together.
The first day of school is always a minimum day and this gives teachers a chance to have lunch together, meet new staffers and greet returning ones, and hopefully take home a prize. The big raffle is always something to look forward to, with dozens of goodies that everyone wants to win.
Along with dozens of gift baskets and certificates to local restaurants, the big prizes this year were four field level seats at an upcoming San Diego Padres game, which were donated by Vessey & Co., and a 32-inch television set, donated by Ilario Castro.
The HUSD welcomed 11 new teachers this year, and each was called forward to receive a small gift. As is tradition, each teacher told everyone where they are from and what they like to do in their spare time, should they have any.
Margie Stacey, representing the Green and Gold Hall of Fame committee, announced the Teachers of the Year the organization has selected. While the official awards won’t be presented until the annual banquet in November, this year’s recipients have been made public and will be promoted throughout the community over the next three months.
Finley Elementary’s Maria Elena Vega is the recipient for the TK-5th award, Holtville Middle School’s Diana Reyes for grades 6-8, and Holtville High’s Erica Leon-Lopez at the 9-12 grade levels.
